The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at 31st Union, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Transition Comes After Poor Response
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a clearer game identity.
The president noted that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement echoes a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the feedback to consideration and overhauled the title with a renewed goal - one that’s ready to fulfill its promise to our fans.
The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the new Director of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having spent the last 15 years producing and leading some of the most well-known titles in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in welcoming Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to continue observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
The President

Game Details and Concept
The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Take on the competition with unique powers, stakes, and obstacles that shift every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate further news as development continues.
