European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
