Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
