Individuals who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope after their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in May, has taken on this persistent issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to resolve the problem included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Seven members of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their own story and appeared "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the right direction," Hickey stated.

They concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he valued that."
